On the Ponte Vecchio.

Apart from the central section which offers views of the River Arno both up and downstream, the Ponte Vecchio has always had merchants and is now lined by expensive jewellery shops. Above the archway seen here is a passageway (The Vasari Corridor) lined with works of art that connects Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti, so that Cosimo l de Medici could cross the bridge above his subjects in private. The bridge first gets mentioned in 996 and was rebuilt several times, this version dates from 1354.
The Germans spared this bridge during their retreat in WW2, allegedly as its destruction was forbidden by Hitler, all other bridges in Florence were destroyed.

John Prior: Thanks Chris, the prices were high, but I'm not sure about the quality.
The recent rain really makes the texture in the road stand out
John Prior: Thanks Bill, I always think things look better after a shower, it does wonders for contrast.

Good street shot, it looks like you picked the right time to be there, not to overloaded with tourists smile

I find it amazing that all this is on the bridge, I have never seen pictures like this of it before.
John Prior: Thanks Brian, yes The Vasari Corridor was featured in a BBC programme, I did not realise it housed so much artwork. I'm not sure if it is ever open to the public.

Such a bustling city. Interesting what they did to the bridge.
John Prior: I suppose building on bridges used to be quite common, like old London Bridge that burnt down in the great fire. Not many have survived. Thanks Sherri
