The love padlocks of Lecce

Love padlocks have become a local custom. Teenagers, who want to symbolise lasting relationships with friends fastened these around a lamppost on Plazza Sant'Oronzo.

To me, this is actually rather superficial.
Why do people have to try so hard to impress others, to prove that they're really in love.

Nothing really lasts forever.
Padlocks will get rusty and decay one day...
John Prior: No nothing lasts forever, it's the fun in passing that's important.

Interesting way to create a story. You have captured this well as an icon.
I wonder if it would look stronger as a B+W conversion.
I actually disagree with London caller....the thought sometimes is all that counts smile
John Prior: Thanks Savo, yes it is the thought that counts, we are all specks of dust in passing.
I think that it is a great tradition John.... it even looks like a Christmas tree....great find....petersmile

John Prior: Thanks Peter, I was told the idea came from a children's novel, but I was unable to find out its name.

I love stuff like this, John. A fad, for sure, but very creative and artistic. Everyone can get on the bandwagon and be part of it. smile
John Prior: Thanks Ginnie, I was told the idea came from a children's novel, but I was unable to find out its name.

A love of padlocks: this must be an obscure disease with a very long name. What an image!
John Prior: Thanks Chris, less cynicism, but then again, perhaps a good description of the affliction.

It makes a fine and interesting sculpture John.
John Prior: Thanks Chad, yes I agree.
I like this idea very much. It will never be static and can grow and grow - maybe even to other posts if there is enough love.
John Prior: Thanks Mary, yes I wonder if the idea will spread, I found some shots on flickr also.

Great find with this one! Ashtoning custom which creates a true modern sculpture! Wow!
Have a nice day.
John Prior: Thank you Dom, my son tells me that they have a similar custom in Japan.
